Orthodontic FAQ

Focus on fundamentals

Your quick reference guide to make the most of your orthodontic treatment.

Will I have any food restrictions while I have braces?

Some foods can damage your braces, which can slow progress. During your treatment, we ask you to avoid certain foods, but don't worry, this part lasts a short while and then you’ll be back to enjoying all the foods you love (with your gorgeous set of chompers).

Foods to avoid:

  • Chewy foods — bagels, licorice
  • Crunchy foods — popcorn, chips, ice
  • Sticky foods — caramel candies, chewing gum
  • Hard foods — nuts, hard candies
  • Foods that require biting into — corn on the cob, apples, carrots

Foods with a green light:

  • Dairy — soft cheese, pudding, milk-based drinks
  • Breads — soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins without nuts
  • Grains — pasta, soft-cooked rice
  • Meats/poultry — soft-cooked chicken, meatballs, lunch meats
  • Seafood — tuna, salmon, crab cakes
  • Vegetables — mashed potatoes, steamed spinach, beans
  • Fruits — applesauce, bananas, fruit juice
  • Treats — ice cream without nuts, milkshakes, Jell-O, soft cake
Are braces painful?

When you first get your braces, you may notice that your teeth and mouth feel a little tender or sore. Your lips, cheeks, and tongue may become irritated for one to two weeks as they toughen and become used to the braces. This is perfectly normal. We promise your mouth will not be sore forever!

We would be happy to give you some wax that you can put over the braces to lessen the tenderness, just let us know! To relieve painful spots on your lips or gums, dissolve one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of lukewarm water. Swish and gargle this solution in your mouth for a couple of minutes (do not swallow).

If biting and chewing is painful, stick to soft foods for a few days. If the pain is more severe and does not go away after rinsing, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever.

My teeth feel a little loose. Is that ok?

Not to worry—this is expected! Your braces must first loosen your teeth to move them into the right position. Once your teeth have been repositioned, the surrounding tissue will retighten.

What should I do if I have a loose wire or band?

Contact us as soon as possible so we can check and repair your appliance. If any piece of your appliance comes off, be sure to save it and bring it to the office with you.

In the meantime, fix the loose wire by using the back of a spoon or pencil eraser to gently push the wire back into place. If the loose wire is causing irritation to your lips or cheeks, put wax or a wet cotton ball over the broken wire.

Can I still play sports if I have braces?

Absolutely! We recommend you wear a mouthguard while playing sports to protect your teeth and appliance. Let Dr. Mike know if you need help finding the most protective mouthguard for your situation.

In case of a sports emergency, immediately check your mouth and appliance. Contact our office right away if you notice loose teeth or appliance damage. You can temporarily relieve any discomfort by applying wax or rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater.

What is the Invisalign system?

It’s the virtually invisible way to straighten your teeth and achieve the smile you’ve only dreamed of. Invisalign treatment includes advanced 3D computer imaging to depict your complete treatment plan from start to finish, so you get to preview your new smile before any work begins!

Using digital impression technology, we create your custom sets of clear aligners that fit comfortably over your top and bottom teeth. Every two weeks you’re given the next set of aligners in your series until your smile transformation is complete.

What are the benefits of Invisalign treatment?

Invisalign’s aligners are clear, so only you know you’re getting orthodontic treatment. They’re also removable, which means you keep your normal oral hygiene routine and all the foods you love. Invisalign aligners are slim and smooth, so they don’t cause irritation to your mouth.

Even better, the system requires fewer appointments, so you spend less time in the doctor’s chair and more time doing the things that matter to you.

Will Invisalign treatment fit my lifestyle?

Invisalign is designed to fit seamlessly into any lifestyle. There’s no need to change a thing. Continue your day-to-day activities while still straightening your teeth:

  • Snacktime? No problem. Take out your aligners to eat or drink whenever you want.
  • Keeping your teeth and gums healthy is the same, just remove your Invisalign aligners so you can brush and floss regularly.
  • You can occasionally remove your Invisalign aligners to enjoy a night out.
  • With Invisalign treatment, there’s no obstruction of your picture-perfect smile on that special occasion.
  • Appointments slip easily into your schedule. Most visits are in and out, with a quick progress check.
Do many people choose Invisalign?

More than 5,000,000 patients worldwide have been treated with Invisalign aligners, and the number of Invisalign smiles grows daily.
